The most successful endodontists deal with a diverse roster of patients and are committed to keeping up with cutting-edge technologies in order to deliver exceptional client care. That’s a lot to manage on its own.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, behind-the-scenes, most endodontists deal with a significant number of HR issues, which, without the proper support, can quickly become overwhelming for their office managers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By way of illustration, allow me to share with you the following case study… </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Tale of a Tricky New Hire</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sarah has been a dental assistant with RCT Endodontics for approximately two years and is known to be a dependable employee with ten years of experience. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The doctors adore Sarah because she is always available when offices are short-staffed or when employees are on vacation, and she&#8217;s excellent at taking x-rays. Awesome!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Recently, a new hire, a dental assistant named Wanda, complained to the office manager &#8212; </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">we’ll call her Anne</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8212; that Sarah is very mean and yells and curses at her regularly. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What exactly is Anne supposed to do? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How can she respond to and resolve this situation professionally?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fortunately, her employer had already provided Anne with training on the 5 Ws of Documentation, so she’s totally had this. </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What are the 5 Ws of Documentation?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In short, they are the saving grace for your office managers and anyone involved with human resource support in your office. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The 5 Ws stand for: </span></p>
<h3>1. Who</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The office manager should know WHO was involved and WHO has first-hand knowledge of the event or incident (Are there known or potential witnesses)?</span></p>
<h3>2. What</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The office manager should discover WHAT (Ask the employee to describe the incident or recurring issue and the specific behavior or actions leading to the complaint). </span></p>
<h3>3. Where</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The office manager should know WHERE (Describe the location of the incident; was it at the workplace or a workplace-sponsored event)?</span></p>
<h3>4. When</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The office manager should know WHEN (Did the incident occur during regular work hours or on off-duty time)?</span></p>
<h3>5. Why</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The office manager should understand the WHY (Do not guess or speculate! Instead, investigate, and gather information, including knowledge and/or facts or information to support your findings/conclusions, and allow employees to present their version of the event). </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since your office manager is probably also your human resource specialist (no matter what their business card says), you need to ensure that he or she is empowered with HR best practices and the strategies proven to resolve employee complaints.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For a busy endodontic practice, this probably sounds like a tall order! </span></p>

<p>While we can’t necessarily tell you that (psst… we’re hiring!), we can alert you to a bright red flag that you need to be aware of at the very second a prospective employer starts waving it.</p>
<p>We’re here to advise all endodontists looking for jobs to steer clear of the strong <a href="https://ebusiness.ada.org/assets/docs/2502.pdf?orderid=400878">non-compete</a>.</p>
<p>But, wait… isn’t a non-compete indicative that a dental practice is serious about recruiting committed talent and protecting its business, along with all those involved in it?</p>
<p>Well, a little bit, yes. But really, more “no,” and here’s why …</p>
<h2>An Intense Non-Compete = Lack of Confidence in Retention</h2>
<p>When your employment hinges on signing an endodontist non-compete agreement, you need to take a step back and really evaluate what’s actually on the table.</p>
<p>What we mean to say is that a strong or aggressive non-compete is more reflective of the business’ lack of confidence relative to employee retention than it is to do with you potentially ever breaching confidential company information or poaching clients to start your own firm.</p>
<p>No. In reality, an aggressive non-compete is a foolhardy attempt to “foolproof” the natural movement of talent within the endodontist industry.</p>
<p>Here’s the deal: if a dental office is really that good, they will not legally (as flimsy as it actually is) attempt to bind you into their employment.</p>
<p>Rather, they’ll present you with a truly competitive employment offer and let you be the judge whether or not you take it. The strength of that offer will ensure their confidence that you’re not out to get them… or their business.</p>
<h2>Toss the Strong Endodontist Non-Compete Agreements and Opt for Transparency</h2>

But, are we thinking about what snow days mean for our businesses – specifically confused employees not knowing if they can take the day off or risk commuting to work?  </p>
<p>MAKE YOUR SNOW DAY EXPECTATIONS CLEAR</p>
<p>If your office is open on a snow day and an employee claims that they cannot make it in, can you enforce or make the employee use their paid leave towards those day(s)? </p>
<p>If the office is open during a snow day and an employee indicates they cannot make it in, we (the employer) cannot make an hourly employee/ non-exempt use their paid leave. However, we can encourage hourly employees to use their paid leave. </p>
<p>Exempt/salaried employees may use paid leave, but if an exempt/salaried employee works any portion of that day, they must be paid for the full day (8 hours), and no paid leave should be used. </p>
<p>Employees may request to use paid leave or unpaid leave at any time, and it is at the employer’s discretion to approve and or deny the request. </p>
<p>Our opinion is to allow the employee to use all their paid leave before requesting any extra unpaid leave.</p>
<p>Bottom line, whatever you decide, make sure it is clearly stated in your employee manual and that this manual is available to all employees at all times for their reference.</p>
