Trident Endo’s annual Save-a-Smile event was hosted on April 27 from 8AM-2PM at RCT Endodontics Laurel Office. In addition to its distinction as the 6th annual event, this year also boasted the largest volunteer turnout to date with 51 volunteers helping to advance the Save-A-Smile mission. Created in recognition of the American Association of Endodontists’ Save-Your-Tooth month, Trident Endo has once again empowered its surrounding communities with exceptional endodontic care. 

Speaking of recognition, Drs. Adam Orgel and Badri Jureidini were awarded the Prestigious Volunteer for being part of this initiative since its inception. In addition, Dr. Ronald Taylor, Founder of Trident Endo and Dr. Lucciola Lambruschini, Director of Dental services at the Catholic Charities Center of Washington DC, were both awarded the Visionary Awards for making this annual cause a reality for the community.

Founded in 2018, Trident Save-a-Smile Foundation provides tooth-saving care to those with zero access. Our mission is to collaborate with other providers, non-profit clinics, and community centers to minimize the negative impacts of limited access to endodontic expertise.

During the event, our endodontists and dental teams treat primarily low-income and undocumented immigrant patients. Without this important event, these patients would have likely resorted to compromising “underground dentists” to relieve their tooth pain, or they could have lost their teeth by not treating them at all. 

Having damaged or missing teeth compromises self-esteem and self-confidence. Trident Endo’s Save-A-Smile patients reap the benefits of their root canal treatments by re-entering the workforce with a beaming smile.

Transforming Lives: In 2024, our donated endodontic services amounted to $28,198, covering 15 root canals for 14 patients.

Cumulatively, our remarkable volunteers have treated 125 patients, delivering over $225,000 worth of root canal treatments! 🦷💙

Our efforts are facilitated by the generosity of donors like the MSDA Foundation, Foundation for Endodontics, Support DDS, and Brasseler USA Dental Instruments. We thank you for continuing to support our mission by ensuring we have the resources required to make endodontic care accessible to everyone.

1.Of all the support that Trident Endo offers, what task or responsibility are you most grateful to never have to do again?

Dr. Herring: I am grateful to never have to ensure that my staff is properly credentialed and trained. The human resources department does an excellent job at ensuring our staff is adequately up-to-date with necessary training (i.e. CPR, OSHA, Infection Control, etc.) and certifications. Additionally, although I did personal marketing in the beginning, Trident has been excellent at ensuring our referral base receives goodies for major holidays and more! 

2. For any endodontist who is on the fence about a potential partnership with Trident Endo, what “push” would you give them? In other words, what do they need to know to get them to the other side and finally take advantage of this kind of strategic support? 

Dr. Herring: As an endodontist partnering with Trident Endo would allow you to reduce your management oversight and lean more into what matters most which is patient care. 3. If you could, please walk us through a typical day for you… 

Dr. Herring: I start my day at 8 AM. Throughout my day, I see an average of 7 treatments. However, emergencies are always welcome, so my staff and I may see around 8-9 treatments in a day. We wrap up our day at 4 pm, and I usually end up writing notes and making phone calls to patients until 5 pm. 

4. What are three words you would use to describe working at your Trident-affiliated practice?

Dr. Herring: Rewarding, Motivating, Flexibility 

5. What autonomy do you have and love?

Dr. Herring: I love being able to practice how I like practicing. From the instruments and techniques I enjoy to being able to see as many or as few patients as I would like. I love being able to take vacation time when I need to. I also love being able to provide my input in the decision-making process. 

6. What do you think an endodontist looking for a new “home” must hear?

It’s always best to put everyone on the same page with a clear definition at the outset. 

In this case, HSAs are tax-advantaged savings accounts that allow individuals to set aside funds for qualified medical expenses. 

Unlike Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), the unspent balance in an HSA rolls over from year to year, providing patients with a valuable long-term savings tool for their healthcare needs.

We’ve laid out six points outlining how a HSA works, which we encourage you to share with your patients who may not have opened one in the past. 

• Eligibility: To open an HSA, individuals must be enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP); these typically have higher deductibles but lower monthly premiums.
• Contributions: Contributions to an HSA can be made by both the individual and their employer. These contributions are tax-deductible and reduce the individual’s taxable income. Annual contribution limits are set by the IRS.
• Tax advantages: HSA contributions, interest, and investment gains grow tax-free; withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are also tax-free. More on those in a moment! 
• Portability: HSAs are portable, meaning the account stays with the individual even if they change jobs or health insurance plans.  
• Qualified medical expenses: HSAs can be used to pay for a wide range of qualified medical expenses, including deductibles, copayments, prescription medications, vision, and certain dental expenses.
• Withdrawals: Individuals can withdraw funds from their HSA at any time to cover qualified medical expenses. After age 65, withdrawals for non-medical expenses are penalty-free, though income tax is still applicable.

Trident Endo Closes out the Year in Celebration of Growth and Goodwill

BOWIE, Maryland — The ever-growing team at Trident Endo championed by endodontic leaders, Drs. Ronald Taylor and Adam Orgel, are celebrating an incredible year of expansion, innovation, and community stewardship.

“The strides made by our team this year have exceeded my highest hopes and expectations, which makes looking ahead to 2024 all the more exciting and inspiring. I cannot wait to see where we go from here and feel confident that we have the talent and drive to continue pushing our limits and testing the bounds of what we can do for our company and community.”

This year, Trident Endo expanded its number of affiliated endodontic practices to 13, locations including Bay Endodontics, Endodontic Specialists, DC Endodontic Center, RCT Endodontics, Painless Root Canal Specialists, Total Endodontics, and Springfield Endodontics. We further expanded our footprint in Pennsylvania, specifically in Wayne and Phoenixville counties.

We are proud to have also added four accomplished endodontists under the Trident Endo umbrella this year, which has made it possible for us to serve over 17,000 patients as a group. Our Human Resources team is delighted to report that we have had a total of 12 internal promotions this year, with five employees elevated twice! With all this growth and forward momentum, we needed to add managerial and support staff. To that end, we hired additional team members, including dental assistants, front desk leads, office managers and management support.

Speaking of dental assistants, for the first time ever, we recognized an Employee of the Year and are thrilled to share that Evelyn Rivera, Lead Dental Assistant at Total Endodontics, is our inaugural recipient. Described by colleagues as “amazing, resourceful, and knowledgeable,” we are honored to celebrate Evelyn’s remarkable commitment and exceptional work ethic.

A celebration of our collective wins wouldn’t be complete without shouting out Dr. Alexis Herring’s Top Dentist award and feature in What’s Up Media, where she was recognized for being “adept at treating patients of all ages with care and expertise.”

On top of that, Dr. Angela Noguera of DC Endodontics Center was named Top Doctor in the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Ronald Taylor of RCT Endodontics also won the 2023 Washingtonian Top Doc award, and Dr. Bruce Terry of Endodontic Specialists won the Main Line Today and earned the distinction of Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Dentist for 2023.

Two of our other affiliates realized significant growth: Total Endo Englewood, led by top-rated endodontist Dr. Gyu Park, and Total Endo South Orange, with Essex County’s top-rated endodontist, Dr. Janatha “Jonny” Withanachchi at its helm, expanded from offering part-time to full-time availability, a testament to both teams commitment to outreach, education, and community empowerment.

Running parallel to our affiliate growth, Trident Endo has hosted continuing education events, including, last month’s “Endodontic Case Difficulty Assessment & Referral: Do the Root Canal Treatment or Refer to an Endodontist,” hosted by Dr. Jonny to rave reviews.

Additionally, we conducted four in-person Continuing Education courses around DC, MD, and NJ, with more than 150 attendees at these events.

Dr. Adam Orgel scheduled time in October to teach “Endodontic Diagnosis and Treatment Planning,” which offered attendees invaluable information.

On April 13th, Dr. Awadi offered a 2-credit CE course on Advances in Endodontics, hosted at the Copper Canyon Grill during which attendees learned how new advances in endodontics, including CBCT, imaging, instruments, and irrigation techniques are changing the game!

Two weeks later, on April 27th, cybersecurity took center stage as part of our healthcare cybersecurity 2 credit CE Course, with industry expert, Black Talon Security.

In February, Drs. Taylor and Orgel offered an amazing opportunity to upcoming endodontic graduates — the chance to ask questions and learn from them, free of charge. Topics covered included how to evaluate DSO options, strategies to establish a blueprint for creating a career path, and how joining a DSO while owning your own practice provides mentorship and career development benefits.

As in years past, our Save-a-Smile event made an impact on our community by providing $52,472.50 in donated professional dental services, totaling 24 root canals completed on 21 patients. To date, our annual initiative has contributed more than $217,000 in specialized endodontic treatments to those in need in our communities.

Although Thanksgiving is right around the corner, the Total Endo team got a jump on giving thanks by hosting our 2nd annual referral appreciation CE course in accordance with the ADA CERP on November 15, from 6:00-8:00 PM.

The official CE course topic, “Endodontic Case Difficulty Assessment & Referral: Do the Root Canal Treatment or Refer to an Endodontist,” was presented by our charismatic speaker, the very in-demand endodontist and owner of Total Endo, Dr. Janatha “Jonny” Withanachchi. 

The purpose of the CE course was to help attendees gain the ability to identify and classify endodontic cases using the AAE Case Difficulty Assessment Form, and recognize which procedures should be within the capabilities of the generalist in order to make the appropriate referral when required. 

In order to effectively make these assessments, Dr. Jonny presented the risk ratings, 1-3: 1 representing average or uncomplicated cases, 2 indicating high or complicated and 3 signaling an extreme risk. By relying on this rating system, along with the American Society of Anesthesiologists Classification System, and individual patient considerations, practitioners can determine when to refer, rather than treat. 

As Dr. Jonny says, “I believe in creating a pain-free experience, not just during treatment but throughout your entire journey. Let’s keep your smile shining!”

First up: Meet Dr. Jaclyn Cruz of Endodontic Specialists!

Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, NY, Dr. Cruz received her dual Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, in Biology and Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. 

Dr. Cruz then matriculated to the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia, PA where she received her D.M.D. degree graduating magna cum laude. Dr. Cruz then pursued a two-year post-doctoral residency training at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA, where she was awarded a Speciality Certificate in Endodontics.

After completing her specialty training in endodontics, Dr. Cruz moved back to Pennsylvania, where she currently lives with her husband who is also a fellow dentist. Dr. Cruz is extremely passionate about endodontics and enjoys saving teeth while relieving those in pain. She is known for her gentle and calm bedside manner, and her goal is to always make her procedures as relaxing and comfortable as possible for all of her patients.

As she explains, “I love helping patients get out of pain and make it as comfortable of an experience as possible.”

Dr. Cruz’s professional affiliations include the American Association of Endodontics (AAE), the Massachusetts Association of Endodontists (MAE), and the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Cruz is also eligible for her Endodontic Board Certification and is working to become Board Certified.

When Dr. Cruz is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends in New York and Philadelphia, spending time outdoors, cooking, traveling, and going to 76ers games with her husband.

Next up: Welcome Dr. Claudia Garces to the Total Endo team!

Joining our Total Endo South Orange team, Claudia Garces, DMD, brings with her a wealth of knowledge and expertise, along with a demonstrated service record and philanthropic spirit. 

A 2020 graduate of Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Garces served as Treasurer for the Hispanic Student Association of Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Prior to studying at Rutgers, Dr. Garces earned her Bachelor of Science Summa Cum Laude from Fayetteville State University. 

A veteran of the United States Army, Dr. Garces served as an automated logistical specialist and helped provide humanitarian assistance as part of Operation Unified Response, following the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. 

As a volunteer with the United States Red Cross at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Dr. Garces assisted with a variety of dental procedures and actively recruited volunteers.

Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Garces recently co-authored the study “Incidence of second mesial buccal canal in maxillary first molars in a residency program. A comparison between the beginning and the end of residency,” published in the American Association of Endodontics Abstract Submission. 

Finally; Meet Dr. Abasin Safi, joining Painless Root Canal Specialists!

A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Safi completed dental school at Illinois’ Midwestern University.  While in dental school, Dr. Safi met his wife and decided to stay in the Chicagoland area, practicing as a general dentist for six years prior to starting his Endodontic Residency at Oregon Health & Science University. 

Every appointment is handled with care. Dr. Safi’s patients’ oral health is his first priority. 

A member of the American Association of Endodontists and the American Dental Association, Dr. Safi tells us: “I love subverting my patient’s expectations and leaving them with a positive experience.”

Born in Afghanistan, Dr. Safi lived in Europe before moving to the United States. As someone so well-traveled, it’s no wonder that Dr. Safi would choose teleportation and the ability to instantly travel anywhere as his superpower. 

Until then, Dr. Safi might be found exploring the coffee shops and restaurant scene with his wife, golfing, and traveling out of state or abroad with his family, despite his inability to teleport.  

Dr. Safi lives by the adage, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”

What can we tell you about Dr. Lessing?

Although she loves to solve problems but doesn’t like the spotlight, we still can’t resist sharing this short bio on Sunia Lessing, DDS, MS.

Located at our RCT North Potomac office, Dr. Lessing has been in practice for more than 21 years, having graduated from The University of Chicago and later the University of Maryland School of Dentistry where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree and Endo Certificate. 

A member of the International Academy of Women (IAE), New Jersey Association of Endodontists: NJAE, and American Association of Endodontists (AAE), Dr. Lessing is passionate about her profession partly because “It is the best feeling in the world to be able to relieve someone’s pain, and do so painlessly.”

A self-professed avid cookbook hoarder, when she isn’t caring for patients at RCT Endo, Dr. Lessing says “Hanging out with my family is my absolute favorite pastime, and if it is near a beach, even better!”

We always ask our new team members to share their favorite quote during our initial conversations. Dr. Lessing credits her high school math teacher with the words she lives by, which are, “You can be good at a lot of things, but to be the best you must choose one.” 

And we also like to know their coffee preference! In Dr. Lessing’s case, she takes her coffee with two creamers and one Stevia. 

Our RCT Endo team is delighted that Dr. Lessing focused her profession on endodontics and followed her journey to the best endodontic practice in North Potomac.

In this case, the practice was well established and had built a trusted reputation in the local community. For this reason, the practice was poised for growth and synergy with other dental offices.

In this case, the practitioner recognized the opportunity to get backed with major support to grow their patient base and increase access to new referral opportunities — recognized the opportunity and seized it.

Upon collaborating with Trident Endo, the practitioner leveraged the following benefits:
